Being made redundant can be daunting and there are things you need to sort out quickly, some of it quite complex.

They often also present unexpected opportunities on the horizon. Mercer financial advisers can review your situation and keep your goals on track, including helping you understand how your redundancy package can be used or impacts your entitlements.

You’ve got many retirement options available to you – make sure you do it your way.

We can help you set realistic retirement goals and put a plan in place to achieve them, including optimising super, structuring your super income , shares and rental properties, setting up a pension and understanding your age pension entitlements.

Better yet, Mercer Super customers can call us for general advice about super.

A 'Transition to Retirement' (TTR) account-based pension can allow you to access your super while you're still working, full time or part time.  The eligibility age for Transition to Retirement pensions recently increased to 56 years.

If you turned 55 before 1 July 2015 you can start a TTR. If you turn 56 anytime from July 1 2016 you will be able to start a TTR from your 56th birthday.

Three strategies to consider

  1. Less work, same income
  2. More super, less tax
  3. Pay your home loan off sooner

It's something of a balancing act that needs your employer's approval and awareness of legislative changes but has great potential to optimise your super in the years leading into retirement.

You and your family deserve to age well. Mercer's Aged Care Advice service provides families with a unique offering designed to help you and your family:

  • Understand the available types and levels of care
  • Identify options to suit your family
  • Structure your finances and establish a path to follow with confidence
  • Understand the impact on your estate
  • Navigate Centrelink and the Department of Veterans' Affairs

We also offer a placement service in partnership with Equity Trustees which will help source the best accommodation and medical care to meet your needs. The service includes site tours, the negotiation of fees and help with the paperwork.

Estate planning

Moving into care can require a restructure of assets and may impact on estate planning.

Your Mercer financial adviser can identify implications for your estate and non-estate assets like super, helping avoid any unintended consequences. We can also assist you to work with your family or refer you to a qualified professional to help ensure that what you want is what happens.
